Back in Sacto

Well, I got back to Sacto on Saturday, along with Diana and Jon. :-)

No, they aren't moving back here. They need a vehicle, and I had the van that was basically sitting doing nothing. So, I gave it to them. That van has seen 10 years of service for our family. I didn't want the hassle of selling it with all of its flaws, so giving it to Diana and Jon seemed right. I don't want Diana without transportation, especially while she is pregnant. Salt Lake City is might cold in winter. Heck, it was cold there last week while I was there! So, they are now driving back to SLC. Their visit was too short. I miss them already.

Wasatch Mountain?

This is one of the mountains in the Wasatch range east of Salt Lake City. Took it this evening with the new Kodak Z740:

Anyone know the name of this peak?

Black Friday and Karma

Welcome to Black Friday! The alarm went off around 3:30 AM, and I promptly turned it off. I don't remember doing it, but it *did* go off. 5:00 rolls around, and I finally woke up... damn! I missed the opening of a few stores already! Oh well, no huge loss... So, I left the hotel and picked up my daughter Diana at her house. We wander over to Office Depot, so I can replace my now broken camera (What happened? I have *NO* idea... It won't turn the dial to power on at all. No over damage anywhere, but it acts like the dial is jammed). I didn't want the "door buster deal". I wanted the Kodak Z740. Not a high-end camera by any means, but it is 5 megapixels and has 10X optical zoom... I hate digital zoom. Works for me while I look for my better DSLR). There was a line outside, since they opened at 6am. Diana and I got in line. A few minutes later, and we are all inside. We did have a few fun moments, watching the HUGE line coming from Target that was well past where we were. When 6:00 came around, WOW! They moved fast! I wanted NOTHING to do with Target this morning, especially after seeing the line.

OK... now, I am inside, over at the cameras. There are around 100 people in the store. I am literally reaching for the "Take One" tag behind the camera I want. A lady (I use the term loosely) REACHED PAST ME and grabbed ALL of the "Take One" tags for that camera (Turns out there were two tags). The following conversation ensued:

Me: "Excuse me, would you please hand me one of those?"

Her response: "No, one of these is for my daughter who is with me." (Wow... Daughter is nowhere in sight)

Me: "She isn't here. How about being nice and handing me one?"

Her: "No!" (Very rudely)

Me: "Well, that's pretty piggish of you, especially today."

Her: "That isn't piggish of me!" (At this point, others around me were agreeing with me)

The conversation ended at this point, and the rude lady walked away. Diana walked up to me, and told me she saw and heard the whole thing. She was amazed at how calm I was, and how rude the other "lady" was about grabbing past me and not being willing to part with one. So were several other people around me.

I am, at this point, looking at the other camera models on display, trying to figure out another one to buy. I wanted to take pics of my daughter and her boyfriend before I left town! Up walks an Office Depot employee, wondering why we are all over at the cameras. We explained what happened, and asked if they only had two cameras of that model. He opens the cabinet, and counts the boxes. Yep. Two. I asked him about one other model, and then the guy did something totally unexpected... He handed me one of the boxes! He hands another lady who also wanted one the other one (Not the same rude lady).

Score! I got in line, and waited 45 minutes to pay. While waiting, the first lady got to the front of the line and wanted to get her cameras. By now, I am *certain* that the managers knew what had happened. They went back and looked for the cameras. The employee said he handed them out. Nope. No cameras for the rude lady. She got a raincheck. I paid for the camera, and a few other items I decided to get while there. Got out to the car... WAHOO! I cheered for a minute. Good things come to those who wait. Karma is a wonderful thing sometimes!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoy this day, everyone. I hope you spend it with family, and/or friends. I am here in Salt Lake City, spending my morning being incredibly lazy in a hotel (My daughter is less than 2 minutes from here).

Oh, Hampton Inn's... Free WiFi in the rooms now. Yeah! (You guys have my business!)

I am ready for a break... sort of

Tomorrow, 2pm PST, marks the beginning of my Thanksgiving break. I need it, too. I am getting burned out from this semester (although I am enjoying it!). So, I will venture to see my daughter in Salt Lake City, and spend Thanksgiving at her boyfriend's mother's house. Sounds like fun? (It does to me... I love long drives... seriously! And especially to see Diana!)

Now the bad part... I have to study A LOT while on my "break". I have 3 midterms when I get back, along with 2 presentations, and a paper due that week. Ick. Oh well...

OK... now I am ticked off

I just received my latest Readers Digest (yeah, I read RD... what can I say? I like(d) it!). So, I peel off the plastic wrap that protects the magazine from mauling by the USPS. And I notice a TON of inserts in the magazine. Not one or two, but 14! Almost all of these are from pharmaceutical companies, wanting me to buy their drugs. One is a subscription card (There was one on the outside of the magazine as well). 14 inserts? 13 of which are DRUG companies? I am tired of pulling out all those cards just so I can read the magazine. It isn't worth it. According to others around me at the time, they seemed shocked at the amount of inserts in a tiny magazine.

Come on, RD, get a grip and stop throwing in so many inserts. Heck, I'll pay a little extra. Otherwise, when renewal time comes around, you are losing a customer. And maybe others as well, from the response I got.

42

Yep, I am 42 years old today. Now what was the question?

Current Statistics

Today's Weigh-In: 261
Goal: 160
BMI: 42.1
BG: 95

OK... 261 is my baseline at this point. So, after all was said and done, I only gained 2 pounds since July. I am not happy I gained, but hey... only 2 pounds! With all the crud I have been eating.

Stayed on plan all day yesterday. So far, on plan today. :-)

BTW: When I started at 278, my BMI was 44.9.

So far, so good

I have been good and staying on plan, except for one day. Even when going out with members of my team, we went to Applebee's, and I enjoyed the Tango Chicken (7 points) and a Diet Coke... Yesterday, I didn't even use all my points... Still gotta weigh in somewhere, but I figure if I stay on plan, that is half the battle! If I am under 250, I need to drop 2 points from my daily total, not much difference, so I figure I am ok for the moment.

I also started checking my BG values. I was a little concerned that some symptoms I have had lately might be a sign of diabetes, but so far, BG values are under 100 all the time. Ended up getting a FreeStyle Flash for free. Nice little BG meter! I'll keep checking for a while, just to make sure, and then relegate the meter to my medical kit.

Ding! Round 3!

Well, after losing weight, I got lazy... tried to get back on the diet again, got lazy almost immediately... Well, I am back on plan again, starting today. What's my weight? I honestly don't know. I need to find a scale here at the college (Maybe at Health Services) and weigh myself. I'll post that later.

My aunt and my cousin are interested in all of us losing weight together. I think it is a good idea, just trying to figure out how to keep us all accountable being 500 miles apart. A blog? Dunno. Got an idea? Post it in comments! In the meantime, I will probably screenprint my weight loss over at weightwatchers.com and post it here for my own personal accountability.

A new game!

I just found this game, called Chain Reaction. Give it a try, and see if you can beat my score! http://files.deviantart.com/f/2004/188/8/7/gridgame.swf
