Television has it wrong when it comes to CPR
According to this article, that I happen to agree with, television does not really show the often-true end result of CPR. The truth is, most people that have CPR done on them do not survive. Some shows (like Rescue 911 years ago) have a 100% survival rate.
The Truth: Up to 90% of a person having a cardiac arrest will die. However, without CPR, 100% will die. Even a 10% chance is better than none.

Now, why do I mention this article? Having done CPR on more than a few people, when someone performs CPR, bones get broken. That first crunch when you feel AND hear is unnerving at first. But the important thing to remember, is that you are giving that person a chance at living. If they survive, they won't mind a broken bone (or a few), given that they were dead when you started.
So, get trained in CPR. If you have already taken it, but it is over 2 years ago, take it Use it if needed. And don't be afraid that you are breaking bones. You are giving that person a chance.
Take first aid while you are at it also. :-)
