Tired, bruised, achey...

Did I mention how much I *HATE* moving?

Sunday, we moved a bunch of stuff from the garage to a storage place I rented (10x10 ft = $109/mo here... blech). So, I rent a Uhaul AGAIN, and take the stuff over there. The door on the back of the truck jammed because my dolly shifted during the drive. A friend, Mike, pushed the door up hard, and BAM! The dolly lands on my left hand right on my ring finger. It went numb immediately. Thankfully, after several hours, it looks like it wasn't broken, and I may get to keep the nail on the finger. It doesn't show signs of detachment or death.

So, that gets added to the bruised up shin (Serious hematoma time here... finally going down after 10 days), the bruises EVERYWHERE, and that achey feeling I am waking up with everyday. God, I am getting old. Or at least feeling it.

Did I mention how much I *HATE* moving?

Pfizer Receives FDA Approval for Exubera, the First Inhalable Form of Insulin for Controlling Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes in Adults

Note: I don't normally include press releases in my comments here in my blog. But, as many of you know, my husband Rory had diabetes, complications of which finally cost him his life in 2004. I have been following the development of Exubera for many years, hoping that it would enable Rory to go without having to inject himself up to 7 times a day. It didn't come in time for Rory, but anything that will allow diabetics to treat their disease and avoid these complications will get my attention, and hopefully yours.

NEW YORK, January 27 -- Pfizer Inc said today that Exubera® (insulin human [rDNA origin]) Inhalation Powder has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Exubera was found in clinical trials to be as effective as short-acting insulin injections, and to significantly improve blood sugar control when added to diabetes pills. Exubera, which is expected to be available for patients by mid-year, is the first inhaled form of insulin and the first insulin option that does not need to be administered by injection in the United States.

"Exubera is a major, first-of-its-kind, medical breakthrough that marks another critical step forward in the treatment of diabetes, a disease that has taken an enormous human and economic toll worldwide," said Hank McKinnell, chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer. "The global incidence of diabetes is currently at epidemic levels. Millions of patients are not achieving or maintaining acceptable blood sugar levels, despite the availability of current therapies. Exubera meets a critical medical need by offering a highly effective and needle-free alternative to diabetes pills and insulin injections to manage this complicated, debilitating disease."

Exubera is a rapid-acting, dry powder human insulin that is inhaled through the mouth into the lungs prior to eating, using the handheld Exubera Inhaler. The Exubera inhaler weighs four ounces and, when closed, is about the size of an eyeglass case. The unique Exubera Inhaler produces in its chamber a cloud of insulin powder, which is designed to pass rapidly into the bloodstream to regulate the body's blood sugar levels.

Exubera Meets Medical Need
"Many people who could benefit from insulin are fearful of injections, so they delay treatment five years or ten years, placing them at risk for serious complications. Now, for the first time patients can improve blood sugar control with fewer or no painful injections," said Dr. William Cefalu, Exubera investigator and chief of the division of nutrition and chronic diseases at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a campus of the Louisiana State University System, in Baton Rouge.

The efficacy and safety profile of Exubera was studied in more than 2,500 adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes for an average duration of 20 months. In clinical trials, many patients using Exubera reported greater treatment satisfaction than patients taking insulin by injection. Significantly more patients who had used both Exubera and insulin injections or diabetes pills reported an overall preference for Exubera.

"With Exubera, I've been able to control my blood sugar levels and not constantly worry about how I manage my diabetes," said Jamie Villastrigo, a type 2 diabetes patient and Exubera clinical trial participant.

In patients with type 2 diabetes, Exubera can be used alone as an alternative to rapid-acting insulin injections or diabetes pills, or in combination with diabetes pills or longer-acting insulin. In patients with type 1 diabetes, Exubera will be used in combination with longer-acting insulin.

The Burden of Diabetes in the United States
Complications commonly associated with uncontrolled or poorly controlled blood sugar levels include heart disease, amputation, blindness and kidney failure. Diabetes and its complications are estimated to account for $132 billion in direct and indirect health care costs annually.

Nearly 21 million Americans have diabetes and approximately 95 percent of these people have type 2 diabetes.

In type 2 diabetes, the body does not make or use insulin well enough to manage blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes progresses over time, and eventually most patients will need to administer insulin to achieve blood sugar control. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin at all. These patients must take insulin to survive.

All people with type 1 diabetes and a large percentage of people with type 2 diabetes need treatment with insulin. While insulin has been proven to be effective to reduce blood sugar levels and the risk of complications, health care providers and patients often have been unwilling to start treatment. Factors include patients' fear of injections and social embarrassment associated with needles.

Exubera is the result of one of the most rigorous and innovative diabetes development programs. Pfizer has invested in two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities—the world's largest insulin plants in Frankfurt, Germany, and a highly automated, high-tech production facility in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Exubera is a product of a collaboration between Pfizer and Nektar Therapeutics. Pfizer recently reached an agreement to acquire the sanofi-aventis worldwide rights to Exubera. The two companies were previously in a worldwide alliance to co-develop, co-promote and co-manufacture Exubera.

Important Safety Information about Exubera
Patients should not take Exubera if they smoke or have stopped smoking less than six months prior to starting Exubera treatment. If a patient starts smoking or resumes smoking, he or she must stop using Exubera and see a health care provider about a different treatment.

Exubera may affect lung function so patients need to have their lungs tested before starting Exubera, and periodically thereafter, as directed by a healthcare provider. The test involves exhaling into a measuring device. Exubera is not recommended for people that have chronic lung disease (such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema). Also, Exubera should not be used at all by people with unstable or poorly controlled lung disease.

Like all medicines, Exubera can cause side effects. As with all forms of insulin, a possible side effect of Exubera is low blood sugar levels. Some patients have reported a mild cough while taking Exubera, which occurred within seconds to minutes after Exubera inhalation. Coughing occurred less frequently as patients continued to use Exubera.

Patients and health care providers can call 1-800-EXUBERA and register to receive more information about Exubera when it is available. The hotline can be accessed in English.

First week down at school

And I have this feeling of, "Oh, God, what have I gotten myself into". There is so much to do for each class! And I am still finishing moving. I rented a storage unit, so I can sort some of the junk I have been hauling around for years, on my schedule. I got rid of a lot the last time I culled stuff. Hoping to do the same this time. I found a storage unit that I have until 4/1 for around $120. If I can work it out right, I should be able to go down to a smaller unit at that date.

Oh, I started using Microsoft Onenote today. It is taking some getting used to, but I think it will work better than GoBinder has (with its memory hogging problems). If anyone knows where to find OneNote Beta 12, let me know.

Moving Day Came and Went

Friday, we moved all the furniture that was going into the apartment, except my bed frame. I had to take it apart, since it is all wood, and we ran out of time. Speaking of running out of time... I needed to have the truck back to Uhaul by 7pm. At 6pm, we finished loading the last load of the day. Got over to the apartment around 6:15. A lady and her daughter came out just as we were getting the first items off the truck. We were staging the items in an empty parking space, to save time, since I needed to gas up the truck before returning it. I had set a deadline of 6:30pm for everything to be out of the truck, so I could get it back in time. We told the lady, "3 minutes, and this will out of your way." I don't think she believed us, since the truck was PACKED. But literally, within 3 minutes, we had the truck unloaded completely, and swept out. I think for her, it was a jaw dropping moment. Her comment to us: "Wow! If I hadn't seen it, I would never have believed that could get unloaded that quickly".

Too bad she hasn't seen a DMAT in action. :-)

Now, all we need to do is get the boxes moved. Some are moved, some will go into storage. I need to give away my frig, washer and dryer (actually, w/d are now spoken for), two dressers, maybe more. Oh yeah, and clean up the place before turning over the keys.

Once I have energy, and my new place is up to snuff, I will take those pics and post them here. Right now, my back hurts, and I need to get ready for school tomorrow. Oh yeah, CSUS Spring 2006 starts tomorrow. My last semester until I have my bachelor's degree!

Got the apartment

I got the apartment that I applied to rent. I will see the actual apartment tomorrow, as it is supposed to be ready. I know what it looks like already, since the floorplans are identical in all the units. As long as it is clean, and has no mold, I am happy. As I mentioned before, it is only a couple of years old, which is a positive thing in my view. And I have a view of a park that is across from my front door.

Now, I just have to arrange all the other crap that goes with moving... changing phone service, cable or satellite (probably cable... sigh), and broadband access. The phone company web site AND the cable site both say that they don't service the address.

I'll take pics tomorrow and post them.

My Treo and Nakedness

Have you ever left something at home that you normally wear, such as a hat, and felt absolutely naked? That is how I have felt the last few weeks since I killed my Treo 650. I tried to use a new cell phone (A Sony Ericsson z520a), but there are several things about it that I really don't like. Like accessing the battery compartment. And that the screen occassionally freaks out. And, oh yeah, text messaging with 9-key again. Total pain in the ass. It goes back to Cingular tomorrow.

Over this last week, I started monitoring Treo 650 auctions on Ebay. It was pretty easy to pick off the fake sellers. I decided not to worry about a new unit, unless I got a damn good price. But many of these went for $450 and up. Not a huge discount (for me, anyway). So, I started bidding on a used Treo. I found a few that I particularly liked, and bid on them. Finally got one! Paid for it Thursday, and it was shipped last Friday, the 13th. I figured with the holiday it wouldn't get here until Tuesday, but went out today to check what mail did show up yesterday, and IT WAS THERE! Ooh ooh!

Yes, the unit appears exactly as described by the seller. It seems to work just fine. I always reserve judgement for a day or so, since many of you are Treo 650 owners, and know about reset issues with some of the units. But this one isn't showing that so far. Even got a Treo BT headset and a Treo leather case in the deal. How did I pay for it? I have been selling other stuff on Ebay myself. Paid for most of it this way. Hope to pay for the rest by selling more stuff, like old textbooks.

So, now I don't feel so naked anymore. And I am not out another $600 for a new one.

New place to live?

I put in an application for an apartment not far from here. I really don't want to live in an apartment, but hey, I won't have to worry about mowing the lawns, etc. The place is only a couple of years old, and in really good shape. I'll lose about 800 sq ft of space, and I do lose my garage. :-(

So, hopefully, I will get an answer today or Tuesday at the latest (Monday is a holiday and the corporate offices are closed). Cross your fingers!

Update on my CES trip

While coming back from Las Vegas, I happened to take pictures of some "interesting" things. US95 provides an entertaining drive (This is the road that I found the "Shoe Tree" on just north of Walker Lake):

This is up there in the WTF? department. Does anyone know the story of this? Someone is REALLY upset with the NV Dept of Wildlife and Washoe County District Court.

Click on the picture and read the NAME of this High School... I wonder where the new one is.

CES, Treo update, and more

I made a semi-last-minute decision to attend CES. I was hedging on going for the last few weeks, but then was given a reason to go. Work. It was just enough to pay for me to go, so I figured, 'Why the hell not?'

I am glad I went. There wasn't a lot of OMG new hardware that got my attention, but there were a few items. You can go to Computer Reviewer Online to see some of the stuff that got my attention. I had some really good conversations with several people, mostly Palm and Tablet PC related, but these may result in some great developments in the future. I attended a gathering of Tablet PC owners at a place called Cheese Burger (which BTW makes WONDERFUL burgers!). It was nice putting a face to the people I have been conversing with this past year on TabletPCBuzz.com and StudentTabletPC.com. Especially Trevor and Rob! I discovered a pair of teenagers running a successful podcast on Tablet PC's... gotta listen to them! And although it was very short-lived, I got to see some of my family members. I miss seeing them, and only getting to once or twice a year isn't enough. Especially my niece. She is growing like a weed!

On the Treo 650: It is dead. The Bootload screen never changed with washing the salts out, and now the screen won't light up. I am resigned to the fact that I now own a $600 brick. Know anyone that has a 650 to sell cheap or donate???

Well, I guess I'd better get packed and on the road soon. See ya!

Wow... Rainfall during the storms

According to this graphic in today's Sacramento Bee, we got 4.72 inches of rain from Dec 30 through yesterday. No wonder my backyard is so waterlogged! There is standing water in many places in my yard. Not deep, but it isn't draining very well since the soil has so much water in it already.

Glad to see blue sky today! There is still a chance of rain, but not much rain.

Most roads here are now totally cleared. There is a remaining residual mud layer on some roads, but most look like there was never any flooding (amazing, isn't it!).

A New Year, a New Try

Today's Weigh-In: 266
Goal: 160
BMI: 42.9
BG: 96

I am back on track and losing weight again. This after finals week put me in junk food hell, and then the holidays occurred. I reached a high again of 272, and am now down to 266 again. I am back working out at 24 Hour Fitness. I spent 45 minutes this morning walking, cycling, and swimming. Aside from a little sore, I feel good! I needed to get off my butt again and start taking care of myself again.

Oh, I got a C- in Organic Chemistry. Not a great grade, but I passed.

Round 3 of the storms and flooding is today

Welcome to 2006. Oh, Happy New Year! May this year be wonderful for all!

Now the bad news:

Here is the current weather at my house(Note the wind speed... that is SUSTAINED WINDS... It is gusting over 50 MPH):

Remember the pic of the firetruck blocking Walerga Road yesterday? It seems a local 16 year old tried to go down Walerga in her pickup. Didn't make it far, and they needed to rescue her with a helicopter from Sac Metro Fire.

Walerga Road was closed still at 9am... Guess they figured out after the 16 year old got past, that they'd better put out more than a firetruck (Hey, the firetruck convinced me not to go past!), so the signs and barricades went up.

It is now reopened. It will probably flood again later today.
